  20. Introduction

  23. I realise that it may seem that you have to read a lot of instructions
  24. before you can do anything, but I've tried to spell it all out in as
  25. much detail as possible in an attempt to pre-empt the common problems
  26. which people have had in the past.  I get so many e-mails about the
  27. "Too Long" problem, still.
  28.  
  29. This file gives some instruction on how to get ArcWeb up and running at least
  30. on a local basis.  Once this has been achieved, there are help files supplied
  31. in HTML format.  Run !ArcWeb and click SELECT over the icon bar icon to open
  32. the index page, and then you can follow links to information about the helper
  33. applications and their configuration.  I suggest you read the instructions
  34. for network configuration very carefully.  There are instructions further
  35. down for upgrading your current ArcWeb to this version.

  37. If you get stuck, try the Problems file.  This is a FAQ style document
  38. containing around 20 common questions and answers.

  42. Before running for the first time
  43. =================================
  44.  
  45. ArcWeb cannot do everything itself.  It needs 'helper' applications.  These
  46. are stored inside the !WebHelper application.  KA9Q users need to read the
  47. section immediately below.  FreeNet/Acorn users can skip to the next
  48. non-indented paragraph.

  53.     This version of ArcWeb is unlikely to work with KA9Q.  I suggest
  54.     that you investigate FreeNet or Acorn TCP/IP release 4.
  55.

  57. Copy any auxiliary applications you have into !WebHelper application.  To do
  58. this, double-click on !WebHelper and the subdirectory will be displayed.
  59. !FilerURLs is already installed in this directory.  You must configure your
  60. e-mail address and on-line news server name (if you have one).  See
  61. 'Configuration' below.

  63. You may choose to install things like SoundCon inside !WebHelper so that
  64. they automatically load when ArcWeb does.

  67. Patching ChangeFSI
  68. ==================
  69.  
  70. Read the instructions in the file "ReadMeDocs.JPEG_Fix" for instructions
  71. on modifications that should be made to ChangeFSI in order to enable it
  72. to support more types of JPEG image.

  75. How to install the DNS configuration files
  76. ==========================================
  77.  
  78. If you are not already running a FreeNet configuration or using
  79. InetDB or DNSResolver, you will need to install the DNS configuration
  80. files in your InetDBase$Path directory.  You do not actually need
  81. the DNS module running, as ArcWeb contains a DNS resolver anyway.
  82. If you are using ANT !InetSuite, then you need to install part of
  83. the DNS resolver - the configuration file - inside !InetSuite.
  84.  
  85. The Name Lookup service is responsible for asking other machines
  86. (nameservers) to convert hostnames which the user sees (like
  87. delenn.ecs.soton.ac.uk) into IP addresses (like 152.78.67.42) which it needs
  88. in order to be able to connect to a given machine.
  89.  
  90. You need to ensure that the configuration files are already present in
  91. the files database (InetDbase$Path - typically !Internet.files or
  92. !FreeUser.files)
  93.  
  94. Read InetDB.ReadMe1st for more information on configuring the files.

  97. To run it
  98. =========
  99.  
  100. Launch !ArcWeb by double-click on !ArcWeb in directory viewer, or
  101. double-clicking on HTML files.  Click icon bar icon to bring up 'home' page.
  102. All applications inside !WebHelper will be loaded automatically.
  103.  
  104. Rather than babble on at great length on what each menu entry does, I
  105. recommend loading the Acorn !Help application and then an exploring of the
  106. menus.  !ArcWeb supports full interactive help on all windows, dialogue boxes
  107. and menus.
  108.  
  109. Basically: To follow a link, click SELECT over it; to open a new page choose
  110. Open URL from the Navigate menu over a document (or from the icon bar menu).
  111. Alternatively, to go to a specific URL you can enter it in the icon at the
  112. top of an open ArcWeb page.

  115. If you get 'Too Long' errors
  116. ============================
  117.  
  118. Quit !ArcWeb. Move !WebCache closer to the root directory of the device on
  119. which they are stored, and then 'run' it by double-clicking on its icon.
  120. See Problems Q18 for more details of why you must do this.

  124. Configuration
  125. =============
  126.  
  127. You MUST reconfigure the e-mail address and the news server address.  Click
  128. MENU over ArcWeb's icon bar icon and choose "EMail & News" from the
  129. "Configuration" menu to open the configuration window.  You may wish to set
  130. up proxy servers for HTTP, FTP, gopher and WAIS in the Network window.
  131. ArcWeb will handle FTP and HTTP and gopher itself if you want it to.

  134. as !Help's icon) at the top of the Network window.

  137. How to change the default page
  138. ==============================
  139.  
  140. The 'home page' is controlled by an environment variable ArcWeb$Home.  If
  141. this variable is not set when ArcWeb is run, it will set it to a default
  142. document within an ArcWeb subdirectory.
  143.

  145. How to change the cache location
  146. ================================
  147.  
  148. The 'cache directory' is controlled by environment variable Arcweb$CacheDir
  149. If this variable is not set when ArcWeb is run, it will set it to a default
  150. directory within an ArcWeb subdirectory.  The !WebCache application supplied
  151. contains a !Boot file which initialises this variable to a subdirectory of
  152. itself.  This allows !ArcWeb to be stored in a read only filing system.

  154. Don't put extra files in the cache directories.  The cache manager will find
  155. these and remove them.  By default it allows 75 files to be cached (no size
  156. limit) so it doesn't want other things clogging up the directory.  The cache
  157. manager will remove anything not in the index, and remove anything from the
  158. index which doesn't exist in the sources directory.  IF the Cache Manager
  159. cannot remove a file (because it is open for example), it will leave it
  160. there.

  162. How to remove everything from the cache
  163. =======================================
  164.  
  165. Open the Cache configuration window and click on the 'Flush images' or 'Flush
  166. everything' menu items.  You will be prompted to confirm the action.
  167.  
  168. Every so often, the cache is checked for documents which have passed their
  169. expiry date.  These old documents are removed (unless they are currently
  170. being fetched, or are currently being viewed, or if it is inlined image
  171. which is part of a currently being fetched/viewed document.).  This facility
  172. can be disabled in the Cache configuration window.  The frequency of the
  173. checking can also been configured from there.

  176. How to control the authentication database
  177. ==========================================
  178.  
  179. The 'authentication database' holds a cache of servers and their realms which
  180. have required authentication in the current session.  By default, it is wiped
  181. when ArcWeb exits (but can be reconfigured in the Network configuration
  182. window) as a security precaution.  Its location is controlled by
  183. ArcWeb$AuthFile which is set by !WebCache or !ArcWeb when it is run and
  184. !WebCache hasn't set it yet.

  187. Running with RISC OS 3.60 and later (inlining JPEGs)
  188. ====================================================
  189.  
  190. ArcWeb 0.37 and later contain support for inlined JPEGs - a facility
  191. built into the RISC OS ROMs in RISC OS 3.60 and later.  Since I do 
  192. not have a Risc PC700 to test with, this feature is not enabled by
  193. default as I have no way of testing it personally.  To the best of
  194. my knowledge it will work though.

  196. To enable the JPEG option, enable the option in the Browser configuration
  197. window.   If the option has been used, ArcWeb will verify that you have
  198. SpriteExtend 0.80 or later before attempting anything clever.  (In fact
  199. it makes it unselectable if you don't have a suitable module).

  201. It appears that Draw has a problem with the draw files that I export with
  202. contain JPEGs though.  I'm not sure why this is at the moment and it is still
  203. under investigation.

  207. Configuration of ArcWeb
  208. =======================

  210. All the configuration windows are available on the Configure submenu
  211. of the icon bar menu, and from the Options menu on the page menu.
  212. See the Problems file for more on how to reconfigure these programs.
